Life would just be so much better if we could get the following things for rent:
Attractive and well-connected friends; a status-setting book and magazine collection that lends just the right degree of hipster cred; a boyfriend (or girlfriend, take your pick); a Doppelgänger; a decoy baby to help us fit in better in Prenzlauer Berg; a fully decorated Christmas tree (with inclusive pickup on Jan. 2); puppies; a professional evil clown stalker to mess with our ex; a computer whiz to keep up with all our social networking commitments; an impressive art collection.
Help is at hand, at least for the last item on the list. Founded in 1968 as the first lending library for art in Germany, the Graphothek in Reinickendorf holds a collection of more than 5000 modern artist prints, including some originals, all rentable for a small, flat fee. From Kandinsky and Picasso all the way to lesser-known talents, the ever-rotating stock is carefully alphabetised and categorised and can be rented—framed and ready to go—for between three and 12 months.
As for the rent-a-puppies, guess we’ll have to wait a little longer.

Das Leben wäre um einiges großartiger, wenn man sich die folgenden Dinge ausleihen könnte:Attraktive und gut vernetzte Freunde; einschlägige Buch- und Magazin-Sammlungen mit Hipster-Vertrauenssiegel; Boyfriends (oder Girlfriends, je nachdem); Doppelgänger; Babys als Ausstattungsaccessoires, um im Prenzlberg nicht so aufzufallen; fertiggeschmückte Weihnachtsbäume (inklusive Frei-Haus-Abholung am 2. Januar); Hundewelpen; berufsmäßige Stalker in gruseliger Clown-Montur für die Terrorisierung des Verflossenen; Internet-Cracks, die einem das Social Networking abnehmen; und nicht zuletzt: eine beeindruckende Kunstsammlung.
Der letzte Punkt auf unserer Wunschliste ist abgehakt. Seit 1968 bietet die Reinickendorfer Graphothek als erste Leihbibliothek Deutschlands eine Sammlung von 5000 modernen Künstlerdrucken (darunter einige Originale) zur kostengünstigen Ausleihe an. Der Bestand umfasst neben Größen wie Picasso und Kandinsky auch weniger bekannte Talente, ist übersichtlich und alphabetisch geordnet und kann – gerahmt und fertig zum Mitnehmen – für drei bis zwölf Monate ausgeliehen werden.
In Sachen Hundewelpen-Vermietung müssen wir uns aber wohl noch ein bisschen gedulden.
