Who’s there?
Comedy is a fickle medium. There are as many ways to make someone laugh as there are to make them cry—in short, infinite—not to mention that tickling someone’s funny bone is dependant on an array of cultural and social factors. Paying homage to the comedy film genre’s many sides is Berlin’s first Comedy Film Festival, starting tomorrow. The weeklong programme takes its inspiration from international, cross-cultural comedies, in a concerted departure from the shallow gags and Hollywood hijinks that make up the genre’s mainstream side. From Japanese samurai slapstick to an Australian slasher spoof, animated Polish satire to a witty Romanian Rom Com, the festival’s varied offerings are helpfully laid out in the programme with a legend delineating them as one of seven categories, like laugh-out-loud-, weird-, gross-out-, or meta-funny.

Die Komödie ist ein wandelbares Genre. Schließlich gibt es so viele Möglichkeiten, jemanden zum Lachen zu bringen, wie es Möglichkeiten gibt, jemanden zum Weinen zu bringen. (Mal ganz abgesehen davon, dass unser Sinn für Komik von einer Vielzahl kultureller und sozialer Faktoren abhängt.) Ab morgen widmet sich das Comedy Film Festival ganz der Komödie, präsentiert im Rahmen eines einwöchigen Programms Filme aus allen erdenklichen Ländern und Kulturen und geht dabei den hohlen Gags und Hollywood-Albereien, die für den Mainstream des Genres stehen, ganz bewusst aus dem Weg. Von japanischem Samurai-Slapstick über australischen Slasher-Ulk bis hin zu einer rumänisch-moldawischen Romantic Comedy sind im informativen Programmheft alle Filme verzeichnet und einer von sieben Kategorien zugeordnet. Darunter: „Schenkelklopfer“, „Eigenartig-komisch“, „Eklig, trashig, unfreiwillig komisch“ und „Meta“.
