Every good party has a set of stock characters in attendance: the jokester, the sexpot, the moocher, the unabashed dancer, and so on. Our favourite: the enigmatic eccentric, that smoldering, mysterious figure lurking around the edges whose dark, distinctive look can’t help but catch your eye—jagged-edged, but with a smooth mien. Do you have the guts to approach? No. Do you stare? Yes. (Surreptitiously.) Later, it’s this very character who will prove to be the most memorable element of the night.
Mitte’s Altbau soirée has been missing just such a presence. Enter L40, taking the stage on an oddly-shaped wedge of land on Rosa-Luxemberg-Platz. This new project is not art meets architecture; it is artist meets architect. Talents from both fields collaborated to produce this dramatic coalescence of extremes.
Currently hidden by a web of scaffolding, the unveiled building will be all angles and sharp concrete edges, jutting sharply into its surroundings with an imposing black concrete façade.
It embraces extremes, conspicuous yet harmonious with its urban setting. Like that intriguing oddball at the party, L40 demands attention without saying a word.
Go ahead, it’s okay to stare.

Auf jeder guten Party gibt es die üblichen Verdächtigen: den Spaßvogel, die Sexbombe, den Schnorrer und den Tänzer, dem so gar nichts peinlich ist. Die Liste ließe sich fortsetzen. Am liebsten ist uns aber der geheimnisvolle Exzentriker, der undurchschaubar und auratisch durch die Gegend schleicht. Sein düster-markantes Aussehen – einschüchternd trotz sanfter Gesichtszüge – macht uns neugierig. Sollen wir es wagen? Nein. Starren wir etwa? Ja. (Aber verstohlen.) Und auch nach der Party geht uns dieser Typ nicht aus dem Kopf.
Den Altbau-Ensembles in Mitte hat so ein Sonderling bisher gefehlt. L40 thront auf einem keilförmigen Stück Baugrund am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz. Talente aus den Bereichen Kunst und Architektur haben gemeinsam diese Zusammenballung von Extremen entworfen.
Wenn das zurzeit noch hinter einem Baugerüst verborgene Gebäude enthüllt wird, werden seine vielen Winkel und Betonkanten und die schwarze Fassade scharf aus der Umgebung hervorstechen.
L40 vereint extreme Formen, ist auffällig und harmoniert trotzdem mit seinem Umfeld. Genauso wie der Party-Exzentriker zieht es alle Aufmerksamkeit auf sich. Ohne ein Wort sagen zu müssen.
Also los. Glotzen erwünscht.
