The Shim Sham Shimmy (or Shim Sham, to those on the inside) is the must-know Swing dance step. Invented in 1927 by master tap dancer Leonard Reed, think of it as a cool-cat version of the chicken dance—a legendary dance combination passed down proudly (unlike the chicken dance) from generation to generation. The Shim Sham is usually performed as an encore from the band, the dancers, and the singers to conclude an evening—a choreographed secret handshake guaranteed to up your street cred.

Balboa Swing Club is a gathering of Swing enthusiasts, meeting Tuesdays at KaterHolzig (from November on, Thursdays) and Wednesdays at Neukölln’s Chez Heiner, usually accompanied by a live band and complemented by organiser DJ Balboa Cid’s extensive collection of original swing records. First-timers perfect their moves by partnering up with the more seasoned, with the Shim Sham Shimmy performed by all—in classic facing-the-stage style—to ring in the evening.

Shim Sham Shimmy (für Eingeweihte: Shim Sham) ist der Swing-Tanzschritt schlechthin. Man kann sich den von Stepp-Maestro Leonard Reed im Jahr 1927 erfundenen Schritt als die coole Variante vom Ententanz vorstellen. Anders als letzterer wurde die legendäre Shim-Sham-Tanzfolge aber mit einem gewissen Stolz von Generation zu Generation weitergegeben. Üblicherweise wird der Shim Sham als Zugabe von der Band, den Tänzern und Sängern gleichermaßen gegeben, zum Abschluss des Abends und als choreografierter Handschlag, der eine ordentliche Portion street credibility verschafft.
