Your body is your best friend and your worst enemy. Because sometimes, it just can’t be trusted. It likes to play tricks—the eyes especially. The very thing you’re looking for is usually the one thing you can’t see, even if it’s right under your nose. Emotion leaves us blind to the flaws of those we love and hyper-sensitive to those of the people we don’t. And familiarity numbs our vision, rendering most of the things we come across during our everyday routine practically invisible.

Reconfiguring the way we see the world around us is “With New Eyes,” a new, artist-developed walking tour that adapts a blind person’s perspective on Berlin for the seeing. Throughout the two-hour experience, being held twice weekly throughout October, participants wear an earpiece that feeds them audio cues, directions, and descriptors of sounds and smells, the prompts that a blind person would need to find their way along the route.

The stops on the tour are not sightseeing landmarks, but places where sound plays a particular role. As a memento, instead of snapshots participants get a CD of music made with sounds from where they stopped and saw again—with new eyes.

Der Körper ist des Menschen bester Freund und schlimmster Feind zugleich. Manchmal kann man sich einfach nicht auf ihn verlassen. Denn er spielt uns Streiche. Unsere Augen sind das beste Beispiel: Wir suchen nach etwas und sehen es nicht, obwohl es sich direkt vor unserer Nase befindet. Unsere Gefühle machen uns blind für die Schwächen der Menschen, die wir lieben, und überempfindlich gegenüber den Schwächen derer, die wir nicht lieben. Gewöhnung stumpft unseren Sehsinn ab und macht viele Dinge, denen wir im Alltag begegnen, quasi unsichtbar.

Die von einer Künstlerin entwickelte Walking Tour „With New Eyes” will Sehenden nahebringen, wie Nicht-Sehende die Welt wahrnehmen.

Während der zweistündigen Tour, die im Oktober zweimal wöchentlich stattfindet, bekommen Teilnehmer über Kopfhörer akustische Hinweissignale, Richtungsangaben und Beschreibungen von Tönen und Gerüchen zugespielt — Wegmarken, auf die ein blinder Mensch zurückgreifen würde, um sich zu orientieren. Halt gemacht wird nicht an touristischen Sehenswürdigkeiten, sondern an Orten, die sich durch ihre Geräuschkulisse auszeichnen. Zur Erinnerung gibt es statt Fotos eine CD mit Musik, in die jene Geräusche eingeflossen sind, mit deren Hilfe die Teilnehmer gelernt haben, die Welt mit neuen Augen wahrzunehmen.
