Some things have unarguably benefited from technological advances: the Pill, for example, which flooded women with an aggressive torrent of mood-swinging, blood-clotting hormones when introduced in the 1960s; or mobile phones, which used to be the size and weight of a brick.

Then there are some things that are just better old school. Like vinyl records.

The decades since the humble record was first invented have spawned such technological leaps in music as the cassette tape, the compact disc, and, last but not least, the mp3. Just as the video killed the radio star, the iPod threatened to condemn the record player into antique obscurity. How many parties have you gone to where the DJ’s only tool was a sleek MacBook?

Yet vinyl has hung on, thanks to those who appreciate its richer, more nuanced sound, and sales have even grown in certain niche markets. Part of that force comes from Retreat, a Kreuzberg record label with a motto of quality, not quantity: four EPs per year, in vinyl only—modern house with lashings of jazz, soul, and drum and bass.

Bestimmte Dinge haben definitiv vom technischen Fortschritt profitiert. Die Pille zum Beispiel, die bei ihrer Markteinführung in den sechziger Jahren Frauen mit einem harten Cocktail aus stimmungsverändernden Hormonen vergiftet hat. Ganz zu schweigen von Handys, die früher so groß und schwer wie Ziegelsteine waren.

Andere Dinge sind einfach besser, weil sie old-school sind. Schallplatten zum Beispiel.

Zwar haben Audiokassette, CD und zuletzt das mp3-Dateiformat die Musikwelt seit der Erfindung der Vinylscheibe revolutioniert. Genauso wie Fernsehen und Video einst die goldene Ära des Radios beendeten, schien der iPod den Plattenspieler endgültig ins technische Kuriositätenkabinett zu verbannen.

Und auf wie vielen Partys sind die DJs heutzutage lediglich mit einem MacBook ausgestattet?

Trotzdem: Vinyl hält sich zäh, vor allem wegen seines reichen und nuancierteren Klangs. Die Verkaufszahlen steigen zum Teil sogar wieder. Anteil daran hat nicht zuletzt das Kreuzberger Plattenlabel Retreat. Vier Vinyl-EPs pro Jahr – Modern House mit Anklängen an Jazz, Soul und Drum'n'Bass – stehen für Retreats Philosophie: Klasse statt Masse.

Bei der monatlichen Label-Party – an diesem Donnerstag im Edelweiß – werden euch die Sounds zu Gehör gebracht.
