Even in this anything-goes, out-in-the-open era of reality television shows, YouTube video diary channels and tell-all confessional autobiographies, there are still some key things best kept in the private sphere. Weeping over Bambi, for example; comfort eating, or clipping your toenails—all are best conducted in secret, when nobody else is around. For many, singing falls into this category as well. Too ashamed and embarrassed to do it in public, most people can only be caught singing in the shower, or when a guilty pleasure Lady Gaga hit comes on the car radio.

It’s time to stop being afraid: Singing is about to come out of the closet. This Sunday, a workshop for those who love to sing but were always too embarrassed to do so publicly will be welcoming all hesitant (or tone-deaf) songbirds with open, judgment-free arms.

Part of the first-ever Chor@Berlin festival, the inaugural session of the “I-can’t-sing choir” will be led by a patient, seasoned vocal instructor, and also serves as the kick-off for a monthly open singing hour that will be held at Radialsystem V.

Sing your heart out.

Sogar im Zeitalter von Reality-TV, YouTube-Vlogs und autobiographischen Enthüllungsberichten gibt es bestimmte Dinge, die man besser für sich behält. Zum Beispiel, dass man bei Bambi immer wieder in Tränen ausbricht, zur Frustfresserei neigt oder sich nach dem Duschen die Füße fönt. Alles Dinge, die man besser unbeobachtet im Verborgenen macht. Singen gehört für viele in die gleiche Kategorie. Und weil die meisten von uns sich zu sehr schämen und zu schüchtern sind, um in der Öffentlichkeit mal eben so loszuträllern, kann man uns höchstens unter der Dusche dabei erwischen – oder im Auto, wenn unser klammheimlicher Lieblingssong von Lady Gaga im Radio läuft.

Wir finden, dass es an der Zeit ist, alle Sorgen über Bord zu werfen und sich mitsamt seinen Gesangsambitionen zu outen.

Zögerliche (oder komplett unmusikalische) Singvögelchen, die zwar gerne trällern, bisher jedoch zu schüchtern waren, ihrer heimlichen Leidenschaft öffentlich zu frönen, haben am Sonntag Gelegenheit dazu. Dann findet nämlich – im Rahmen des neu gegründeten Festivals Chor@Berlin – die Antrittsprobe des „Ich-kann-nicht-singen“-Chors statt, der offen für alle Stimmen ist. Die Probe wird von einem geduldigen und erfahrenen Chorleiter bestritten und bildet zugleich den Startschuss für ein monatliches offenes Singen im Radialsystem V.
